Val Thorens with Lorna Dalgleish

Val Thorens was the first Ski resort I had the joy of falling over multiple times in. I hated the flat green runs and the long walks that came with them… and the terrible weather and visibility I had to learn in. That was 2 years ago…

After finishing the Nokia videos (which I’ll post soon!) I immediately packed and hopped on another flight to join Scottish Snowboarding sensation(al at getting injured everytime I’m with her), Lorna Dalgleish. She’s pretty good – for a girl – and my goal was to keep up with her speed without the help of an avalanche.

This time there was not a cloud in sight all week, and the goggle tan was worth the excellent conditions. VT overtook Les Arcs as my favourite place to board, and my opinion of Lorna fell drastically as I beat her best speed by 2km/h. We only took a handful of decent photos as most of the time was spent either eating croissants or browsing reddit on the Montana Hotels awesome wee-fee connection.

The large panoramic was made from around 40 handheld 70-200mm shots on the 5DII and the original file is a pretty lovely 86 megapixel image. Bit of a bastard to edit but worth it in the end.

I went to Les Arcs

Unfortunately that’s not me in the picture above. I’ve no idea who it is but they were certainly throwing some nice moves at the Les Arcs snow park.

I’ve just returned from a week of snowboarding and it really couldn’t have been any better – we had clear blue skies for 95% of the time. Luckily the bad 5% (which really wasn’t tooooo bad) was on Friday afternoon, with large snow clouds drifting in to ruin skiing conditions for the people coming in for their half-term holidays.

I’ve only ever been to Val Thorens and La Plagne before this but Les Arcs was pretty good – certainly better than La Plagne anyway! We stayed at Le Belmont ~~Hotel~~ Apartments in 1800 which was ski-in/out and a 5 minute walk to the shops, bars and restaurants. The only downsides were the slow wee-fee connection (at €20 for your apartment, multiple IPs) and the thick, square pillows which have left my neck at a permanent 45-degree hey-look-I’m-trying-to-watch-a-mobile-video-someone-filmed-in-portrait-mode angle.

For the first time ever on a Thomson / Crystal Ski holiday, we had a rep who went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure our stay was worth the little money we paid. Ellen, thank you for coming to our apartment at 4am to make smoothies for us, it was really appreciated. You earned your Excellent rating and rude drawings on your feedback form. The only gripe I have is that you didn’t provide the lesbian orgy party and fleshlights we vehemently asked for.

Not I Am Legend 2 – London Edition

A week ago Cali and I went around looking for locations to shoot some videos and headshots for his multiple online dating profiles (facebook & twitter… of course). As we were walking around Bank and Monument stations the sun decided to pop out to give us some much needed Vitamin D. As we were basking in this rare, beautiful light we snapped a few photos. Most were fairly mediocre and of little use (much like a Mac) but some were prime Photoshop targets. Here’s one of them. Original photo is here. I’ll stick a more detailed guide or the actual PSD up soon (although it is 1GB in size). PS The clothing is by Supreme Being (who have been keeping us very warm all Winter).

Reason #9001 of why RAW is better

I’ve forgotten the number of times I’ve managed to polish a crap photo thanks to shooting in RAW – here’s another example of why JPG is rubbish in comparison. Yassin and I met Franck ‘Cali’ Nelle on one of the usual Croydon rooftops earlier for a very quick ‘photoshoot’. Yassin² wanted to shoot some B&W film stock for uni so I snapped a few images while I could. Here’s the original photo…

Ok, well, maybe not a lot of freerunning but I’ve been playing around with 3D photos the past few weeks and have come to the conclusion that it’s quite cool. Here are a few test pics, all shot on the 5D in both single and dual-cam set-ups. Note: these are best viewed with stereo glasses but also work with the Red / Blue variety.

Storm Origins – Colour grade and shot breakdown

A couple of emails inquiring about the colour grade in the latest Storm chickflick unfortunately found their way out of my spam folder and into my inbox. Although it’s really a case of – as one certain person put it: “just make it blue, done” – there’s a tiny bit more to it… Not a substantial amount, but enough to warrant finally making a post about it. I would’ve done this sooner but I’ve been in temporary retirement from the media industry. And I’ve been destroying bitches at Black Ops.

This post is under construction, with another few examples to come in the next few days…

Concrete Circus – Mathieu Ledoux Post

Before the first big day of filming (featuring the larger-than-usual crew above), Kerbie and I showed Mathieu Ledoux some of Croydon’s best attractions. Obviously going to Nando’s, Shakeaway and the market didn’t take too long so we had a bit of an impromptu photo session straight after. We sadly didn’t get too many shots on the day as we filmed a few bits and pieces for the film as well, but he did throw a couple of lovely moves for the camera. All of these are on the 5DII because, as we all know, the 7D is a bit poo for photos Lenses were – 15mm fishy, 50mm for the portrait and 70-200mm for the grind.
